BELMONT-LES-DARNEY

In front of you stands a huge block of stone carved by the hermit to make his home and a kind of shallow artificial cave dug by hand: the hermitage of Barcan. The hermit practiced retting here, which consists of macerating textile plants such as flax, hemp, or nettles to help separate the filamentous bark from the stem.

Valrose Hermitage

ROZIERES-SUR-MOUZON

Valrose is a former hermitage built inthe 15th century when the parish church was undergoing renovations. The bell tower housed a bell dating from 1660 and a long eave forming a canopy that protects the porch, which was rebuilt in 1691.

The hermitage was located next to the woods, right next to the chapel. There always had to be two hermits at the hermitage.

It came to an end in 1793 with the sale of the chapel as national property. It was then bought by Bernard LEGRAS.
