This monument was erected in honor of the Vosges resistance fighters.

On September 7, 1944, after an unequal battle against German forces who were holding the inhabitants of the villages of Grandrupt-de-Bains and Vioménil (around 700 people) hostage, the resistance fighters surrendered. The hostages were the fathers, mothers, sisters, wives, and children of the resistance fighters.

The attack by the resistance fighters left three dead and 213 prisoners, 117 of whom died in Nazi concentration and extermination camps.

A marked trail starting from the memorial leads to the rock where the Maquis command post was located.
