A strategic town in the Duchy of Lorraine until it was annexed by France in 1766, this village is truly fascinating. The southern gateway to Lorraine, on the borders of Franche-Comté and Champagne-Ardenne, the town enjoyed a golden age fromthe 16th tothe 18th century. From its Barrois, Lorraine, and French heritage, Châtillon-sur-Saône has accumulated a remarkable heritage that is still largely preserved. Renaissance architecture, mansions, cellars, and monumental gates are just some of the discoveries to be made around the corners of the streets of this fortress promontory.

You can explore the old village on a guided tour and visit the shepherd's and cobbler's house museums.

The Renaissance town was awarded the Beau Village Lorrain distinction in 2019 and has been part of the Petites Cités deCaractère® network since the end of 2025.
