Harcourt Castle in Isches
Harcourt Castle is located below the village of Isches. It was originally called "the castle below Isches" or "the Old Castle," a name still used today. Built in the16thand17thcenturies by the Choiseul-Aigremont family, it was one of three fortresses in the village, along with the castles of Choiseul and Chauvirey, which have since disappeared, destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.
During this war, which was terribly devastating for Lorraine, Antoine III de Choiseul d'Isches, governor of La Mothe for Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine, covered himself in glory by heroically defending the ducal fortress against the army of Marshal de La Force, before being killed there by a cannonball on June 21, 1634.
Nevertheless, in 1636, the Swedes spared the old castle of Isches because its heir at the time, Henri de Choiseul (d. 1649), had submitted to King Louis XIII of France.
The Château d'Isches is not currently listed or classified as a historic monument.
