Columbanus was born around 540 in Ireland. A monk and prophet, a recluse and preacher, Columbanus clashed with religious and political leaders.
Condemned to exile in 610, Columbanus and his Irish companions embarked on a journey lasting more than two years through what are now France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy, where Columbanus ended his earthly pilgrimage in 615 in Bobbio.
Today, it is possible to follow in his footsteps. In the coming years, the trail will be digitized so that it can be followed using a GPS or a phone.
