Vioménil was a Roman passage through the Saône Valley. Under Roman occupation, it was called “viamansilis”. The source of the Saône is located in Vioménil, at the bottom of a valley, not far from the source of the Madon. The Saône flows towards the Mediterranean and the Madon towards the North Sea. The Saône owes its name to the Celtic tribe of the Sequanes and the tutelary goddess Souconna or Sauc-onna. The Saône had three names: Brigoulus, Souconna and Arar. It was finally Souconna who remained to her, that the copyist monks gradually renamed Saoconna, from where she got her name from Saône.
