The idea of this long hiking trail is to follow approximately the dividing line of the waters between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. It starts at the Ballon d'Alsace and ends in Andorre-la-Vieille (Andorra).
It was created on the idea of Paul Cabouat, then Vice-president of the National Committee of Great Hiking Trails in 1972.
