Born around 540 in the county of Leinster in Ireland, formed to the cenobitic life mainly in the monastery of Bangor (present suburb of Belfast), Colomban is impregnated with the Gaelic culture and spiritualization of his island.
Whether a monk and prophet, a loner or a preacher, Colomban did not fear conflict when his conception of the evangelical requirement was called into question. He clashes with religious and political leaders, especially King Thierry of Burgundy and his grandmother, Queen Brunehaut.
Condemned to exile in 610, Colomban and his Irish companions then embarked on a journey of more than two years through the present-day countries of France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy, where Colomban completed his earthly pilgrimage in 615.
It is planned, in the coming years, to digitize the path so that it can be followed with a GPS or a telephone.
