Escles
The Vallon Saint-Martin accompanies the nascent course of the Madon over 4 km. It has preserved many traces of a human occupation:
Quarries: they are found everywhere in the valley. This exploitation has probably an ancient origin because Gallo-Roman steles and necropoles were updated around Escles.
Chatelet: this spur was perhaps a Celtic oppidum and surely a feudal castle (castral clod).
Eremitic habitat: the cave of Saint-Martin and other rocks sheltered hermits. A system of basins, near old fountains, were cleared.
Cuveau des Fées: near the Source of the Madon, is a monumental fountain trough broken in place in his career.
Grotto Saint-Martin: «Gallery» dug by the hand of man. At what time? For what purpose? Despite extensive excavations, the mystery remains intact. 40 meters long, 4 wells of 1 to 6 meters of depth, at the bottom of which the water outcrops. For security reasons, the entrance to the gallery has been closed. Ancient place of worship on the theme of sources and the underground world? The cave of Saint-Martin keeps its secrets...
